    The forest is growing!

The climate crisis has arrived in the heart of our forests – with full force! The dramatic impacts can be seen everywhere. Millions of trees have died since 2018 due to heat waves, drought, storms and heavy rainfall, even in Rheinland-Pfalz. The Boppard Forestry Office manages the forests on the left bank of the Rhine between Bingen and Boppard, as part of the “Upper Middle Rhine Valley World Heritage Site”. Foresters in these districts and numerous other employees look after more than 19,000 hectares of woodlands, doing everything they can to preserve and reforest the forest. And this is where we aim to help!

Before Christmas, we started a reforestation project, in which we plant a tree for every click, in cooperation with the Boppard forestry office. With this initiative, we seek actively to safeguard our forests, and make the world a little more valuable.

Then the time had come and we set off with the first 100 trees and the very nice and highly committed district forester Ralf Kerber, to exactly this place:  50°11’37.1″N 7°35’51.9″E

Here, everything was prepared and equipped with professional tools for tree planting, such as the “hoopoe”, a special hoe for knocking holes in the forest floor to plant the seedlings. We – Marcus and Andreas – planted wild cherry and wild service trees.

    Here are a few pictures.

The wild service tree in particular, is characterised by excellent properties, which are aligned with the changing climatic conditions. It is a deep-rooted tree, which makes it resistant to wind, and it can also cope with less water. Growing to be 200-300 years old and over 30 metres high, it bears its first fruit after 10-15 years. The fruit is very healthy and can also be used to make a very noble and high-quality brandy, which is expensive due to the large amount of fruit needed to prepare the mash and the low resulting yield of finished brandy.

After a few hours and with a lot of professional help, the work was done. And one thing became clear: that’s not enough for us!

We will plant many more trees – also with your support. And we will initiate, implement and support many more sustainable projects. Here you can always check back again to keep up to date with our environmental initiatives. See you here … and in the forest!
